Understanding the Impact and Risks of Pressure Ulcers: A Study Review

Pressure ulcers, commonly known as bedsores, represent a significant challenge in healthcare, especially among hospitalized patients and those with limited mobility. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis, published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine, highlights the global incidence of pressure ulcers, key risk factors, and the impact on different hospital wards.

The study found an overall incidence rate of 12% for pressure ulcers among hospitalized

patients, with higher rates in orthopedics, oncology, and intensive care units (ICUs). Risk factors include advanced age, low mobility, and underlying health conditions such as diabetes. Importantly, nearly 20% of patients with pressure ulcers were diabetic, underscoring the need for proactive screening and specialized care in these populations.

Pressure ulcers pose severe health risks, including infection, extended hospital stays, and

increased mortality. The study advocates for enhanced prevention strategies and training for healthcare professionals to reduce incidence rates and improve patient outcomes.

At WoundFree, we’re committed to raising awareness about the importance of early detection and proper wound care. For those at risk, regular screening and preventive measures can make a profound difference.
